Job Description


The Director of Manufacturing Engineering is responsible for designing, fabricating, machining components, and building (finished) machines and to successfully integrate them seamlessly (to enhance) the manufacturing process.

Essential Functions

  • Designs custom machinery to manufacture components.
  • Design tooling needed for machinery
  • Design jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of parts or products.
  • Takes drawing concept to tooling, machinery and finally to manufacturing parts.
  • Ability to machine and program parts using: manual toolroom machinery as well as CNC mills, Lathes, Grinders, and etc.
  • Evaluate manufacturing processes by designing and conducting research programs; applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials conferring with equipment vendors; soliciting observations from operators.
  • Develop manufacturing processes by studying product requirements; researching, designing, modifying and testing manufacturing methods and equipment conferring with equipment vendors.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning work flow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  • Maintain product and company reputation by complying with government regulations such as CAL/OSHA
  • Keep equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer’s instructions and establish procedures; requesting special service.
  • Complete design and develop projects by training and guiding technicians and other engineers.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Evaluate existing manufacturing processes and workflows to identify areas that could benefit from changes and improvements.
  • Create processes and procedures to help the company meet budgetary goals as well as performance quotas.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and cross-departmental meetings to ensure collaborating and cohesion.


Previous experience as a manufacturing engineer or similar role

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, fabrication methods, tool design, use of CNC machines, etc.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing equipment and quality assurance techniques
  • Commitment to health and safety standards and environmental regulations

Well-versed in relevant software (e.g. CAD (Solidworks), MS Office.

  • Knowledge of statistical methods for process capability and control.
  • Project management skills
  • Problem-solving ability
  • High level communication skills both verbal and nonverbal.
  • Willingness (Ability) to occasionally work late shifts or long hours.
  • Degree in Engineering; post-graduate degree is a plus

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. Although some elements require working in a shop floor environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

The employee must be able to lift a maximum of 100 pounds unassisted, waist high, up to 10 feet away, and up to140 pounds of weight assisted.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This position regularly requires normal office hours.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with coursework in the metal or plastic manufacturing process
  • 10 years of experience with sheet metal stamping, design, and fabrication techniques
  • Minimum of 10 years working in a manufacturing plant as a Manufacturing Engineer

or machine designer/builder.

  • Designed and built custom machinery
  • Design and machined custom tool and die
  • Able to program and integrate PLC’s or microprocessors into the control of existing machinery or new machinery designs.
  • Working knowledge of pneumatic and Hydraulic systems as applied to machinery development.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Preferred Master’s degree
  • A working knowledge of plastic injection molding machinery methods.
  • Experience in the creation of robotic workcells
  • Three to four years’ experience with SolidWorks 2012 or later, experience with
  • Working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5-2009 and MIL-STD-100 standards and practices
  • 10 years of experience with sheet metal stamping, design, and fabrication techniques
  • Advanced understanding of motors and motor controls
  • Demonstrated ability to make good decisions quickly
  • Self-confidence to tackle both internal and external issues which affect project objectives
  • An uncompromising commitment towards achieving goal targets
  • Demonstrated ability to make data driven decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to create detailed action items and follow up
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in new product development or sustaining existing products
  • Recognition as a technical subject matter expert in the product(s) overseen
  • Perform complex interference fit checks, motion studies, and tolerance stack-up analysis (GD&T) on medium assemblies.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to ensure project completion.
