Thermal Mass Cooling – Explained

Understanding thermal mass cooling is essential when studying how a QuietCool whole house fan works. A great example is something many people do already. When someone comes home from work, they enter a house that could be upwards of 80 degrees! Do they immediately turn on the air conditioner? No, because it would take too much time, and that would be incredibly expensive. Usually the homeowner will open a few windows to let fresh air evacuate the home of the hot stale air. Once the inside temperature, has dropped a few degrees they then turn on their A/C.

This strategy is very similar to how QuietCool whole house fans work, but at a much more efficient rate. Instead of opening your windows, and having to rely on the “passive” breeze coming into the home, and cool the air inside, the QuietCool fan creates an, “active” breeze which not only cools the inside air, but also cools down the mass of the home! Instead of recycling hot, stale ambient air like a closed-loop A/C unit, the QuietCool system exchanges the stale air, with fresh, cool outside air, , through an open-loop whole house ventilation system… and at a fraction of the cost of running an air conditioner.

The Result of Thermal Mass Cooling

Now that the home’s mass has been cooled, what are the benefits of this? A “cool mass” home does not reheat as much, or as quickly as a “hot mass” home. Within a day or two of installing a QuietCool system, homeowners are amazed when they come home after work. After the day was 90-100 degrees outside, they walk into a home that is closer to 75 degrees instead of 85 degrees.

The reason is because the mass of the home has been cooled by the QuietCool system, and thus did not reheat as rapidly throughout the day. This not only raises the comfort level of those living in the home, but it also will drastically reduce one’s A/C usage, bringing down the A/C related costs, and will help the air conditioning unit last longer!
